There is a lot of worldwide interest in electromagnetic frequencies or EMF's. Depending on what research papers you look at EMF's are perfectly safe or will kill you. This is a pretty big discrepancy! While it is beyond the scope of this article to look into this in detail, in my opinion one has to minimally conclude that there are some commercial interests at stake. Where money is involved one has to question the research and where the funding for research is coming from. With that being said and while all this is fascinating what I want to look at is a case study in electric hybrid cars and EMF's.
When you research these cars and the EMF's they emit you might not be surprised to see that they too have mixed reviews. Some research indicates they do emit more EMF's than traditional cars and other papers say it's not an issue. No real surprise here as the jury is still out on EMF's. What I would like to detail though is a case study that might shed some light on the real issue. Perhaps it's not the pure AMOUNT of EMF that is the issue, perhaps it's a person's sensitivity to it that is the key factor.
A little background information is needed now. Heart rate variability (HRV) is how research scientists have been measuring stress in humans for over 20 years. When a person is stressed the fight or flight stress response kicks in. The important thing to know and remember is that the response is the same in a person whether the stress is physical, emotional or "chemical" such as EMF's. When a person is stressed the HRV will drop and the lower the HRV the more stressed a person is. Essentially it's like a lie detector test and if a person is internally stressed the HRV monitor will pick it up and you can't hide it. Medically this test is exceptionally well documented and reliable.
Fast forward to a female that owns two cars. One is conventional and the other a hybrid. She has observed that when she drives the hybrid for long distances she is exhausted and fatigued, unable to properly think and focus on tasks. I think a cynic, or even a normal person, would suggest that perhaps it's just because she has been driving for a long time or perhaps it's psychosomatic and maybe she had a bad experience with that brand of car in the past. All kinds of explanations could be offered I'm sure.
What is interesting, enlightening and different in this case study is that she had a Polar H7 heart rate monitor that was able to assess her HRV in real time. As she wore this monitor she slowly discovered that she was absolutely fine when she drove her conventional car but was not when she drove the hybrid. While I can't rule out psychosomatic I don't believe this to be the case. You see the woman was already relatively unwell and the most logical explanation in my opinion is that she was vulnerable and susceptible to the EMF's of the hybrid car.
If we think about thresholds this might make more sense and become clearer. Let's use a bank account analogy. We have deposits and withdrawals. Now let's say one person has a bank account balance of $100 and the other $1000. If we make withdrawals from this account in $50 increments who will run a deficit and eventually become bankrupt quicker? This particular woman was at the $100 bank balance to use this analogy and went "bankrupt" much quicker as she just wasn't able to cope with the EMF's the same way the someone with a $1000 balance would be able to.
In conclusion there is of course some speculation here but from the perspective of caution I would advise people to be aware of the potential effect that EMF's in general have on us. There are monitors you can purchase to assess EMF's but these don't measure your individual vulnerability. The HRV monitors such as the Polar H7 may offer another tool to help assess your individual vulnerability and I can 100% state they are invaluable when it comes to measuring stress in your life. This is the key thing to reduce if we want to live a long and healthy life. For more information on HRV you can look at this video. Stress Away
