What Is Your Calcium Status?

Monday, 24 October 2011 13:03

When you mention calcium to people it prompts all sorts of thoughts, opinions and subconscious beliefs. Calcium of course is related to all kinds of health issues such as arthritis, osteoporosis, nerve problems, depression, cardiovascular symptoms such as palpitations and elevated blood pressure, and muscle spasms to list a few. It is a mineral worthy of its attention.

When you question people a bit closer, interesting patterns start to appear. The first is that either they do, or do not, believe that they need to take calcium supplements. There is not a lot of in between. When asked on what this belief is based upon it almost always comes down to opinions and beliefs not necessarily accurate personal fact. Things like, "I get all the calcium I need from my diet" or "I'm prone to osteoporosis and need the calcium." While these statements MAY be true the reality is the person has no objective data on which to base their need for calcium supplementation.

Another opinion that is quite interesting is when you ask people about dosage. Again there is rarely any objective data. You can't determine this from a blood test as the blood calcium is maintained at the expense of the tissues. Just guessing is not a good alternative. The reason for this is that disease will happen if you have too much calcium, not enough calcium or an imbalance of calcium with other minerals such as magnesium. High doses can be very damaging and this is not a concept many are familiar with.

Getting a hair tissue mineral analysis addresses both of these common damaging thoughts or beliefs. The simple reality is you are guessing if you haven't had this invaluable test performed and in today's stressful, hectic fast paced world we simply can't afford to guess wrong! Calcium status is important, let's get it right.
