Why Am I Dizzy When I Stand Up?

Monday, 02 July 2012 15:57

One of the most common concerns a person comes to me with is dizziness. Often they have undergone multitudes of testing with no answer. In actuality there are many reasons for dizziness that range from low blood sugar, inner ear issues, virus's, and neck alignment. The one that is arguably the most common though is when it is the result of poor adrenal function also known as adrenal burnout or adrenal insufficiency.

Your adrenals are little glands that sit on top of your kidneys. They are responsible for many functions, one of which is your "fight or flight" stress response. When you are under any form of stress your body will predictably respond by having your adrenal glands raise your blood pressure amongst other adaptive functions. This is an intelligent response as you need the blood pressure to be raised to help you deal with your stress. If a crocodile jumped out at you from the river you
would need the high blood pressure to get away quickly.

herbal-remedies-for-dizzinessWhat would happen though if we lived our lives under chronic stress? What would happen if a crocodile was constantly nipping at our heels? Well our base level of adrenal hormones would be chronically elevated and this would result in slightly higher than normal blood pressure.

Let's say now that a tiger was lying in wait for you as you run from your crocodile. More adrenal hormones would be intelligently produced resulting in higher blood pressure. After many years of this the adrenals can start to fatigue. This is similar to making more withdrawals from you bank account than you do deposits. Bankruptcy is the inevitable end result. In the case of your adrenals, all these stress withdrawals would mean that you would have difficulty in suddenly raising your blood pressure to deal with the stresses in your life. Voila, dizziness from adrenal insufficiency!

Dizziness is a primary symptom of this adrenal insufficiency or fatigue. Most people that are dizzy from their adrenals report the dizziness when they go from lying to sitting or sitting to standing. This is as a result of the adrenals being so tired that they don't have the reserves or capacity to mount a quick enough response to instantly raise your blood pressure to keep you from getting dizzy.

So there you have it in simple language. Burnt out or tired adrenals will cause dizziness. What you can do about it is another issue but please check out my website for more details on how to naturally and successfully rebuild your adrenal health.    Adrenal Insufficiency
